Whether you’re a scratch golfer or a high handicapper, there is one area that all golfers can stay under par. When it comes to conserving the environment, it’s no longer an individual game, but a team effort. Going green seems difficult, but there are many simple steps that everyone can take to help protect planet earth.
For many of us, the golf course is a sacred land that should be protected. We fix divots, repair ball marks and call penalties on ourselves. It’s time we treat the planet in the same fashion that we treat the golf course. Here’s a few ways that each of us can fix a few divots on Earth…
Morning Joe
I rarely miss the chance for a little Morning Joe. It may be the popular morning show on MSNBC or a cup of coffee with one cream and two sugars. When you stop by your local Starbucks on your way to the course, show that you care for the environment and bring your own, reusable coffee mug. Many Starbucks stores offer a discount when you bring your own cup. This eliminates the need for disposable cups, insulating coffee cup sleeves and plastic lids. This simple step can help protect the environment and eliminate a lot of waste. Plus, it may just give you the Karma for that magical round of golf.
Get Off the Bottle
It’s time to get off the bottle and bring a reusable bottle, preferably aluminum or stainless steel (Klean Kanteen), when heading to the golf course or to work. Each day in the US more than 60 million plastic water bottles are thrown away. Most end up in landfills or incinerators, and millions litter America’s streets, parks and waterways. As consumers become more environmentally educated, look for golf courses to proactively address this trend and install advanced water filtration systems. To offset the cost of these systems, courses might charge a nominal fee instead of charging you $2 for that bottle of water.
Car Pool
It's seem pretty simple. Save on gas…save the environment. Utilize this simple motto, “Foursomes don’t need four cars”. Is your foursome heading on a 1-2 hour journey? Fill up the mini van or SUV and have fun! The group will enjoy the camaraderie. Plus, you're guaranteed to have the loser buy dinner or drinks after the round.
Walk the Talk
When given the chance, pass on the golf cart and walk the course. Not only will the environment like your decision, but so will your heart, body, mind and wallet. Walking opportunities are limited in Central Florida as many courses require golf carts. Fortunately the majority of Central Florida golf courses have electric carts instead of gas. Look for more Florida golf courses to offer walking opportunities. Although the 8:00 am Saturday tee time may not allow walking, what about the 7:30 am tee time off the 10th tee? What about the 5:00 pm tee time? Helping the courses out with yield management to fill those 'empty' tee times will help you “save the green”.
